Chapter 32

Gaby

Tuesday 25 August, 10 p.m. Rhos-on-Sea

‘I hope they won’t mind that we disappeared off early,’ Gaby said, slipping the key in the lock.

‘I don’t think anyone would have noticed and, as we have a full day of work ahead of us, it’s only common sense.’ He took the door from her hand, pushed it open and gestured for her to go before him.

‘Right.’

Gaby slipped off her shoes, walked over to the lounge window and set about drawing the curtains. Switching on the table lamp, she tried to analyse how she was feeling. Nervous, certainly. A little scared too but also excited. It was nearly two years since she’d been alone with a man outside of the office, apart from the plumber – a happily married fifty-year-old who would be horrified where her mind was dragging her. He had no interest in her as a person – only in the state of her pipes. She stifled a laugh.

‘I don’t know about you but I feel like a cuppa,’ she said over her shoulder. ‘Want to join me?’

‘Perfect.’ He settled on the sofa and, picking up the TV remote, started flicking through the channels. ‘Anything you want to watch?’

‘I’ll leave it to you.’

She was back within minutes, a bowl of Mini Cheddars in one hand and two mugs in the other.

‘Here you go.’ She handed him his drink and placed hers on the coffee table before sinking into the squashy sofa, leaving a good few inches between them, her attention on the blank screen.

‘I thought you wanted to watch TV?’

‘Nothing on worth watching.’

‘Music then,’ she said, starting to get up, only to be detained by a hand on her arm.

‘No music. No TV. No more excuses. I’m happy to phone for a taxi if you’d prefer? I take it there’s still no bed in the spare room?’

‘Not yet. It’s being delivered on Thursday. For Amy,’ she added, wanting to make it clear what she meant. ‘She’s staying here the night before the wedding.’

Gaby frowned, trying to work out why she was so anxious all of a sudden. She liked him and he liked her. She allowed him to draw her close. The time for words was over.

‘Hello. Darin speaking.’ Gaby slipped her feet out of bed and, reaching for her dressing gown, pulled it around her shoulders, aware of the soft snore coming from the other side of the duvet.

‘Ma’am, it’s Clancy from the station.’

‘As if it would be anything but work at this time of night,’ she whispered, glancing at the luminous dial on her watch, which told her it was heading for midnight.

The floorboards were cold underfoot as she made her way across the room, but she didn’t waste any time trying to remember where she’d left her slippers. Instead she closed the door behind her and made her way to the lounge and the comfort of the sofa.

‘Sorry for disturbing you but we’ve received a call from Mr Strong over at Llanrhos. Miss Thomas has received a death threat.
